Déjà vu Bride:

Deja Vu Bride

One of the first things that grabbed my attention while reading Debra Ullrick's book, Déjà vu Bride, was the main character, Erik Cole's, focus on God, especially when he was distracted by a beautiful woman. I really liked how he is portrayed as morally responsible and God fearing, focused on living an upright Christian life. Here is a line from the book that describes him to a T: "He was not the type of man to think outside the box of marriage. His morals ran too deep for that." What a refreshing change from other books I've read. Easy-going and affable, Erik is a gentleman and treats everyone that way - not just Olivia, the woman to whom he is attracted.

An easy book to be drawn into, Déjà vu Bride is a sweet romance with a colorful cast of characters, from Aunt Adell Preston to Olivia Roseman, Olivia's friend Audra, and Erik Cole, along with his employees and family members. Debra describes Olivia's plight so well I felt sorry for her, knowing she had no money and finding myself actually wanting to leave a bag of groceries on her doorstep so she wouldn't go hungry. From the first time she meets Erik and his family, Olivia is overwhelmed by the welcome she receives, their kindness and generosity and love she experiences.

Debra described the scenes in the book in enough detail that I could visualize exactly what was happening - in the workshop, at Olivia's living quarters, during the church service, on the racetrack - making the book come to life in a way that caused me to want to participate in what was happening. In addition, I learned more about monster trucks as well as detailing them and racing them than I ever knew existed!

I liked Erik and Olivia's easygoing teasing and the moments of humor which lightened up the sadder parts of the story where we get a glimpse of Olivia's hurtful past. Not knowing exactly how to respond to Olivia's emotional rollercoaster and the hurt and unforgiveness she holds in her heart, Erik handles her with care and treads lightly while pursuing a romantic relationship with her, not pushing her in any way, but relying on God's guidance and wisdom to show him what to do. He is sensitive to God's promptings, while at the same time, Olivia is trying to avoid God and deny His divine intervention in her life.

The reader is treated to a close-up view of Olivia's transformation, and I thought that God speaking to her so clearly through the preacher's sermon was a great touch. This really helped Olivia sees how God was working in her life all along, and that He had not abandoned nor punished her for the things she has said and done like she thought He had been doing.

This is an entertaining story, one I enjoyed reading and think you will too.

Good read

This clean Christian romance is well edited and makes no apologies for hope and healing in Jesus Christ. Although it is the second in a series, it works well as a stand alone. I enjoyed it.

Deja Vu Bride by Debra Ullrick

Deja Vu Bride by Debra Ullrick was a very enjoyable story and a quick and easy read. Olivia Roseman has lost nearly everyone she has ever loved and as a result she has turned her back on God. She was fired from her latest job because she reported her boss to the police for an attempted sexual attack. Now she is jobless, penniless, and homeless. Her ex-boss threatened that he would get even so she moved from Wheeling to Charity, West Virginia. She applies for a job at Cole Chevrolet and Erik, the owner who has a deep faith in God, senses that Olivia has reached the end of her rope. After seeing her portfolio of airbrush designs, he hires her to airbrush paint his monster trucks. Erik decides that he will do everything he can to help Olivia but she creates one challenge after the other. As Erik's feelings for Olivia grow, he prays that she will renew her trust in God and that she will open her heart to him.

The description of all the action at the rally was so realistic that I felt as if I were sitting right there in the stands and cheering with the rest of the people. Not only could I see what was going on, I could hear all the noise from the roaring motors. Character development was excellent and the dialogue was so well done that I wanted to jump right into the conversations. The author made the characters so loveable that I could not help but cheer them on in all their endeavors. Of course, Olivia's ex-boss was not even likeable but that is the way he was supposed to be portrayed. The story was inspiring and showed that God never leaves us even if we do pull away from Him. Not only did Debra write a great romantic story but there was enough suspense to add more enjoyment of the book. I have never been to a monster truck rally but after reading this book I feel as if I have experienced the thrill of a rally.

I highly recommend this book to everyone that enjoys a heart warming romance and also likes a little suspense in the story.

A young girl's journey to health

I read and loved this book as an adolescent. I recently saw it at the library and decided to take it out and read it again. I just finished re-reading it and found it as powerful as I remembered, possibly even more so.
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden presents a complete picture of mental illness from the patient's point of view, without the stigma of wrongness that is frequently associated with it. The picture painted is a very real one, from Deborah's relief when the doctors confirm what she's known all along, that something is not right, to the way her family deals with the fact of her illness. Greenberg/Green evokes very strong emotions with her writing. You feel Deborah's fear that her secret world of Yr will punish her for revealing its existence to her doctor, and you share in her triumph when she begins to make her way back to the world. I put down this book with a little more understanding of how it must feel to be mentally ill. I would recommend it to anyone, teen or adult.

A Book for All Time

I read this book many years ago and decided to read it again to see if it was as fine as I remembered. And it was. It has been referred to as semi-autobiographical, which makes the story seem authentic. It tells of 16-year-old Deborah, who has been acting strangely for many of those years. Finally, a suicide attempt forces her family to send her to a mental health hospital. To see the inside of the place through the eyes of a patient gives the reader a new look at mental illness and those who struggle with it.

This is not an easy book, but it is so worthwhile. Deborah's work with her psychiatrist, her relations with her fellow patients, and her slow movement back to the real world make an engrossing tale.

I've often heard of schizophrenic patients "hearing voices," but this book gave me an idea of how intricate an inner world can be for one who feels lost in the real world. I heartily recommend the book.

Where is the new afterword by the author as promised on the cover?

The novel is a work of genius by the woman who lived it. However, her diagnosis of schizophrenia is now being called into question because she was cured through lengthy psychoanalysis, and therapists today rely on quick diagnoses and drugs instead. Alas, the author's new afterword is missing from this kindle book.
